Upon the invitation from the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development (AICS), the Global Network of Water Museums (WAMU-NET) will be actively participating in the 10th edition of the World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali, Indonesia (18-25 May 2024).
WAMU-NET’s contribution to the next WWF features an ‘immersive’ video installation with the title The Voices of Water – Ancient Hydro-Technologies for humankind’s sustainable future, which will be hosted within the Italian National Pavilion (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
The concept of The Voices of Water was developed by a curatorial team led by the art director Giuseppe La Spada. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore eight selected case studies of Ancient Hydro-Technologies (AHTs) through an immersive multi-channel video installation featuring good practices of freshwater use and preservation from Indonesia, Australia, Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Peru, Brazil and Argentina.
Two new videos related to WAMU-NET's core educational projects – The Water We Want and I Remember Water – will spotlight WAMU-NET's efforts towards water sustainability education and dissemination of water heritage practices.

The Voices of Water represents a worldwide preview of WAMU-NET’s contribution to the forthcoming UNESCO's Virtual Science Museum. It will continue to be developed as a travelling exhibition with additional case studies for the Virtual Science Museum of UNESCO. To enhance the project legacy, some of the contents exhibited in Bali will also be made available to WAMU-NET partners for future exhibitions and events.
Following the invitation of the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Water Resources, Bali's temporary video installation will also become a permanent exhibition at the Mandala Mathika Subak Water Museum, located in Tabanan (Bali). This museum, which will be officially inaugurated on the occasion of the Forum, focuses on the Subak system of traditional rice irrigation that embodies the philosophical principle of Tri Hita Karana (which unites the realms of the spirit, the human world and nature).
The Voices of Water was made possible through a fundraising activity coordinated by a professional fundraiser and thanks to the institutional support of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy, and UNESCO’s Jakarta Office, among other partners (in progress).
Alongside the video installation, WAMU-NET is also organizing three side events in the Italian, Moroccan and UNESCO pavilions to deepen the potential contribution of AHTs to the broader framework of ecological transition.
The World Water Forum, organised by the World Water Council, is one of the most important events in the water sector. Taking place every three years, the 10th edition in 2024 will convene in Bali, hosting heads of state, ministers, ambassadors, and delegations from numerous countries, along with professionals and leading companies in the water sector.
